Super Bowl LIII – Los Angeles Rams Faced the New England Patriots

On February 3, 2019 Super Bowl LIII took place in Atlanta, Georgia. It was a close matchup of the Los Angeles Rams and the New England Patriots. The Rams were 15-4 before the Super Bowl and the Patriots had a record of 14-5. In the end, the New England Patriots ended up beating the Los Angeles Rams 13-3.

To give some history, the Los Angeles Rams were known as the St. Louis Rams until 2016 when they changed their location. The St. Louis Rams had one Super Bowl behind their quarterback Kurt Warner, and they are yet to win a Super Bowl as the Los Angeles Rams.

After Sunday’s match-up, the New England Patriots now have six Super Bowl wins, and they are all behind quarterback Tom Brady and Coach Bill Belichick. Tom Brady has won three league MVP’s and four Super Bowl MVP’s. Even though he is a controversial player, Tom Brady is under consideration as the greatest quarterback of all time.  When Martin Liang (‘19) was asked if Tom Brady was the best quarterback, he replied, “He is great, If he didn’t cheat to win those Super Bowls, I think he would be unanimously named the greatest player of all time; however, he did cheat.” The Patriots have two major scandals over their run: Spygate and Deflategate. Spygate was when New England’s team used drones to find other team plays and watch them practice. During Deflategate, their managers deflated their team’s footballs so that they were easier to throw which helped them win a Super Bowl as well.

Both Tom Brady and Bill Belichick have been in the NFL for 19 years so retirement is coming up for both of them. Alex Gianascoli (“19) was asked if he thought Tom Brady and Bill Belichick should retire and he replied, “Yes, I think they should retire because they are both old. They should end on a good note with the Super Bowl.” At the end of the Super Bowl 2019, Julian Edelman was named Super Bowl MVP after playing an incredible game with ten receptions and a total of 141 yards. Tom Brady had already received four Super Bowl MVP’s, so it was a shock to many that he didn’t receive another one. When asked if Julian Edelman really deserved to win Super Bowl MVP, Trent Jones (‘20) responded, “Yes, Julian Edelman was a key part of the offense and especially on 3rd downs.”

Although the Patriots receive a lot of rap because of their greatness, they continue to show their dominance throughout the NFL and come in at the favorites again to win Super Bowl LIV in 2020.
