Dolphins win over Benedictine in home opener

The Dolphins welcomed the Cadets from Benedictine to Cape Henry on Tuesday night for the 2020 home opener as the Dolphins held on to win 76-64. The Dolphins raced out to an early six-point lead throughout the first quarter of play, leading 22-16 after the first eight minutes were in the book. The Cadets went on a run late in the second quarter to take the lead over the Dolphins, with Benedictine leading 36-37 at the half. Despite trailing by one at the half, Cape Henry shot an outstanding 92% from the free-throw line in the first half. With the second half underway, it was all Cape Henry from here on. The Dolphins picked up the tempo on offense and locked down defensively, erasing the one-point deficit at the half and led, 53-47, with eight minutes remaining in regulation. The Dolphins’ stellar night from the charity stripe continued throughout the final quarter of the night as the Dolphins connected for a total of 21 points from the free-throw line on Tuesday night, shooting 84% on the night. Extending the lead to twelve as time expired, the Dolphins erased the Cadets’ halftime lead to win 76-64 in the first regular-season matchup for the Dolphins. Bryson Spell led all scorers with 20 points, while Christian Moore poured in 18. Greg Melvin and Jarrell Pope each scored in double-digits with Melvin scoring 12 and Pope netting 11. The Dolphins (1-0) will travel to Christchurch on Friday night for the John Stone Tournament, taking on Lancaster High School at 5:30 pm.
