Dolphins earn commanding win over Crusaders

Cape Henry hosted Catholic High School on Tuesday night, featuring two unbeaten TCIS opponents and a matchup between the State’s Division I #2 Dolphins and #6 Crusaders. From the opening whistle, Catholic pressured the Dolphins midfield, forcing several turnovers and forcing Cape Henry to play in the defensive half of the field. The Dolphins quickly adjusted to playing the ball down either flank to the Dolphin wings. With the adjustment in play, the Dolphins opened the flood gates, scoring in three quick goals. Mason Dudley found Trevor Kidd on the right-wing for the first score of the night at the 25-minute mark to open the night’s scoring efforts. Nearly a minute later, Trevor Kidd found the back of the net for his second of the night after forcing a turnover in the Crusader’s defensive half. At the 19-minute mark, the Dolphins expanded the lead to 3-0 as Landon Clay assisted Gavin Dooren’s first goal of the night. Just before the end of the first half, Cape Henry added the insurance goal as Kyle Usonis assisted Gavin Dooren to propel the Dolphins to a 4-0 halftime lead. Returning to the pitch for the final 40 minutes of play, the Dolphins continued to control possession with selfless passing. Ten minutes into the second half, the Dolphins struck for number five as Carter Atherton found Gavin Dooren inside the 18 to complete Dooren’s hat trick and extend the Dolphin lead to five. Rounding out the night’s scoring efforts, Trevor Kidd selflessly set up Kyle Usonis on a three on two, counter-attack. With the final goal of the night, the Dolphins carried a 6-0 lead into the final whistle. Matt Vander Werff earned his third shutout of the season with the 6-0 result over the Crusaders. The Dolphins (6-0) will travel to Eastern Mennonite for the Menno Classic Soccer Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
