Dolphins pull out win behind late-scoring surge

The Dolphins hosted the Oaks from Norfolk Collegiate on Thursday night for a conference matchup featuring the TCIS Tournament Champions and TCIS Tournament Runner-up, with the Dolphins catching fire late in the second half to earn the win. Kick-starting the offense, Parker Mann found Gavin Dooren in the box to put the Dolphins ahead 1-0 with 26 minutes remaining in the first half. Eleven minutes following the first score, Mason Dudley stepped up to the 12 and knocked home the P.K. to put the Dolphins in front, 2-0. Norfolk Collegiate snuck one in the back of the net in the closing minutes of the first half to cut into the Dolphin lead. With the score neck-and-neck at the half, the Oaks returned to the pitch and found the back once again to tie the score, 2-2. From this point on, the Dolphins regained control and dominated the remainder of the night, scoring five goals in 20 minutes. Carter Atherton crossed the ball inside the 18 to a trailing Kyle Usonis who drilled the back of the net for the third score of the night. Ten minutes later, Trevor Kidd earned his first assist, finding Mason Dudley for his second goal of the night with 15 minutes remaining in play. The Dolphins began to find the back of the net in rapid succession, scoring the final three goals in four minutes. Mason Dudley completed the Hat Trick on Thursday night as Kyle Usonis found the feet of Dudley on the score with 10 minutes to play. With eight minutes remaining in regulation, Dudley returned the favor, finding Flynn Somers on a corner kick for the sixth goal of the night. Rounding out the scoring, Chris Clunan completed his beautiful run up the right wing to finish of Trevor Kidd’s second assist of the night. In total, Mason Dudley led the Dolphins with three goals, while Gavin Dooren (1), Kyle Usonis (1), Flynn Somers (1), and Chris Clunan (1) each found the back of the net. Representing the team-first approach, Trevor Kidd led the team with two assists, with Parker Mann, Carter Atherton, Kyle Usonis, and Mason Dudley accounting for the remaining assists on Thursday night. The Dolphins (4-0) will take on Walsingham Academy on the road beginning at 4:30 pm Friday, September 13.
