The Dolphins traveled to Norfolk Academy to take on the Bulldogs for the 2019 season-opener on Wednesday night. Despite several battles, the Dolphins fell short in Wednesday’s contest. In doubles play, the number one court pair of Rachel Moore and Stephanie Strickland were handed a defeat with a score of 8-2 but displayed signs for a bright season. On the number two doubles court, Mary Turner Shipp and Anna Kutelia battled to an 8-3 loss, while Caroline Dixon and Parker Matacunas rounded out doubles play on the number three court with an 8-3 loss. With the Dolphins trailing 3-0 entering singles play, the Dolphins would need to earn four of six wins to complete the season-opening win. The Dolphins came up short in singles play despite two exceptional performances from Mary Turner Shipp and Halle Speight. On the number five court, Shipp battled to a 6-4, 6-3 loss in her first Varsity appearance. On the number six court, Halle Speight fell 6-1 in the first game before taking the 6-3 win in the second. Facing a tie-breaker, Speight competed valiantly but completed the night with a 1-0 tie-breaker loss. The Dolphins (0-1) are back in action Friday, traveling to Peninsula Catholic for a 3:30 pm start.
