Athlete of the Week – Caleb Choe – Week of May 17, 2019

This week’s Athlete of the Week, senior Caleb Choe, has dominated the Golf course throughout his life, including his five-year career with Cape Henry Collegiate’s Varsity Golf program. Holding numerous records, tournament firsts, and countless medalist honors, Caleb’s legacy as not only a superior golfer but a true leader will live on with the knowledge he has passed down to the Dolphins’ younger members.

“Caleb is deserving of Athlete of Week because of his consistency week in and week out. Not to mention, he set the TCIS Tournament record in scoring with a five-under, 67 to lead the team to a second straight TCIS Tournament Championship,” Head Coach Jon Corliss said of Caleb Choe.

On Monday, May 6, the Dolphins traveled to Kiskiak Golf Course for the TCIS Tournament as the conference’s top seed. A year removed from a strong supporting performance in the finals, where Caleb finished with a two-over, 74, it was Choe’s turn to dominate. This year, Caleb completed the front nine with a two-over, 38. However, it was the back nine where Caleb demonstrated his perseverance. He proceeded to break the TCIS Tournament record, finishing the round with an All-Time TCIS low, five-under, 67 after completing the back side with a seven-under, 29.

“While this is not the first time the Dolphins have seen Caleb dominate the field, it was how he battled throughout the back side to a record-breaking performance. Caleb has a scoring average of 36.4 during the 2019 season and shot under par 5 out of 13 rounds, cementing his name as one of the program’s All-Time best,” Head Coach Corliss continued.

To truly understand the effort, determination, and hard-work Caleb has dedicated to his craft throughout his career with the Dolphins, we must rewind to Caleb’s first outing on Cape Henry Collegiate’s Varsity Golf roster. As an eighth-grade student-athlete competing in his first Varsity round against the Crusaders from Bishop Sullivan, Choe completed this nine-hole round with 10-over, 46. Fast forward to his final round with Cape Henry Collegiate’s Varsity Golf roster and Caleb took home his second First Team All-State honors after finishing the 18-hole round with an even-par, 72.

“Caleb has improved year after year by becoming stronger and improving his endurance. He has become one of the most reliable student-athletes, with the Dolphins becoming accustomed to him posting a top score,” Assistant Coach Kavin DeJesus said of Caleb.

As Caleb completed his final TCIS Tournament with a record-breaking performance, this is not the first time Caleb has stood atop the TCIS record books. In the 2014 TCIS Tournament, Caleb knocked home a hole-in-one for what is very possibly the first and only ace in TCIS tournament play. His Golf resume for Cape Henry is genuinely extraordinary and continued to grow with each exceptional performance. As his career in Red, White, and Grey comes to an end, a look back on his awe-inspiring honors gives a clearer picture on what Choe has meant to Cape Henry Collegiate Golf.

Caleb has captured First Team All-TCIS honors four years in a row, two of which were TCIS Player of the Year honors. He has earned First Team All-State honors two years in a row beginning with his junior season. Lastly, Caleb has captured over 30 Medalist honors throughout his career with Cape Henry Collegiate, a testament to the steady, even-keeled golfer that is Caleb Choe.

As his Dolphin career finished up with a fourth-place finish in the Division I State Tournament, Caleb will continue to pursue his passion for Golf as he attends Washington and Lee in the Fall. Caleb has been an influential contributing member of Dolphin Golf for five years and will live on in the Cape Henry Collegiate record books as one of the top golfers in the program’s illustrious history.
