The Dolphins traveled to Northern Virginia on Tuesday afternoon for the DI VISAA State Quarterfinals, taking on the Knights from Bishop O’Connell. Tuesday’s matchup ended 1-0 after exceptional outings from both starting pitchers. On the mound for the Dolphins, Aiden Kuhle (9-0) continued his dominance over the competition as he threw his seventh complete game—6th complete game shutout– with eight strikeouts on four hits and no walks. Both sides were held scoreless for four full innings before the Dolphins struck for the game’s only run in the top of the fifth inning. Trent Jones and Josh Holland each drew walks to put runners on first and second with two outs in the inning. Alex Gianascoli stepped up to the plate with a chance to give the Dolphins the lead with a runner in scoring position. On an ensuing wild pitch, Trent and Josh moved up one bag to place runners on second and third for Gianascoli. With the infield in, Alex knocked a single into right field to score Trent on the play and giving Cape Henry the 1-0 lead. Moving forward to the bottom of the seventh inning, the Knights moved a runner over to second base with one out remaining in the matchup. The Knights’ batter poked a single into right field with Gianascoli charging the ball as the tying run was crossing third base. As Alex threw the perfect ball to beat the runner at home, Dane Hoggard applied the tag at the plate and recorded the third and final out of the night. The Dolphins (16-6) will travel to Richmond for the semifinal matchup against the winner of Norfolk Christian vs. Benedictine beginning a 4:30 pm.
