Athlete of the Week – Aleezah Adams – Week of January 25, 2019

Aspiring to play collegiate Field Hockey, this week’s Athlete of the Week, Aleezah Adams, has not missed the opportunity to give back to her community and contribute her athleticism to the Varsity Girls Basketball Team. In her first year at Cape Henry Collegiate, Aleezah has made a statement about her Dolphin commitment. After protecting the frame for the Dolphins’ TCIS and State Tournament victories in the Fall, she has turned her attention to a new group of teammates and has brought consistency to the hardwood from the outset of the season.

“Aleezah had a big impact in the last week’s games, dominating on the boards and providing a major impact on defense,” Head Coach Ramona Dominguez said of Aleezah Adams. “She has become an important part of this team due to her consistent team play, commitment, and unselfishness.”

Throughout competition last week, Aleezah averaged 10 points and five rebounds. She kicked off her performance in a loss to a perennially talented Bishop Sullivan Girls Basketball program, leading the Dolphins in scoring with 10 points and grabbing five boards in the process. She was even more critical in the match-up with Hampton Roads Academy on Tuesday with a second 10 point performance, including four vital points down the stretch to earn the team’s 3rd TCIS win.

However, stats are not what make Aleezah important to the Girls Basketball program. While she has averaged 10 points in the previous three contests, she excels due to her intangibles. Aleezah is the rock for a Girls Basketball program striving to reach the conference finals. She is the vocal leader on defense, controls the paint on offense, and provides clutch performances when the game is on the line. Adams’ value to the program is immeasurable as her presence on the court alone elevates all around her.

“Aleezah makes the team stronger with her ability to push the team and herself in practice and games because her drive to succeed and determination to improve daily,” Coach Dominguez continued. “Aleezah is very dedicated to basketball. She will come to practice early and stay late to practice her post moves and shooting.”

What sticks out about her love for her teammates is the two-game stretch where she was out with an injury. Although she was unable to practice and participate in games, Aleezah did not miss a single opportunity to encourage her teammates. She attended practices, motivating her teammates to excel while observing the aspects of play where she could improve her own game.

The Dolphins will lean on Aleezah to continue her consistency on the court while giving Cape Henry encouragement with a smile on her face. The Dolphins enter a five-game stretch of conference matchups leading into TCIS postseason play, and Aleezah’s presence on the court will be paramount to the remainder of the Dolphins’ Varsity Girls Basketball season.
