NCIS Soccer Quarterfinal Win vs. Paul VI

Soccer- CHC 2, Paul VI 1 (OT)

The #4 Dolphins hosted #5 Paul VI for the quarterfinal matchup of the Division I State Tournament on Monday afternoon and on a muddy pitch, the Dolphins needed six extra minutes to advance to the state semifinal on Wednesday night. Play began with each side attempting to figure out the pace of the slow, wet grass after the rain rolled through Virginia Beach earlier in the day. With the pitch hindering the Dolphin style of play, Paul VI struck first in the 19th minute when the ball was played across the 12 and deflected past John Ermini in goal. John finished the night with seven crucial saves, conceding the lone goal in the first half. The Dolphins remained true to the possession play and with 10 minutes remaining in the opening half, Colin Sharp drilled the equalizer into the back of the net with Carter Atherton assisting on the play. After 10 minutes of scoreless play to close out the first half, each side returned to the benches for halftime discussion.  With play beginning in the second half, Cape Henry continued to dominate possession and outshot the Panthers 22-10 throughout the night. Paul VI allowed several chances on frame, but the Dolphins did not capitalize on the opportunities and the match was to be determined in Golden Goal extra time. The first five minutes flew by without a shot on frame from either sideline. In the opening minute of the second overtime period, Carter Atherton played a ball across the 6 with George Selamaj on the receiving end to finish the game-winner and propel the Dolphins into the state semifinal. The Dolphins will travel to Richmond for a rematch of the 2017 State Finals against #1 St. Christopher’s on Wednesday.
