Alexandra Land – Athlete of the Week – September 22, 2017

This week’s Athlete of the Week, junior Alexandra Land, has the Dolphins rolling. After serving as Kristen Wheeler’s first Sophomore Captain, Alexandra has really owned her place as a true leader in the Field Hockey program. This year’s junior captain has continued to blossom into the leadership role.

“She leads by example with her effort each day,” Head Coach Kristen Wheeler said of Alexandra. “She leads vocally, huddling the team and getting everyone on the same page when needed. She listens, she’s thoughtful in her approach, and she assists her teammates with challenges that pop up throughout the season.” Wheeler continued, “Honestly, it has been really fun to watch her grow as leader. Of course, it is also exciting to watch her play and admire her rocket shots on goal, but as a coach, I am most proud of how she is leading. That is a skill that she will use for the rest of her life.”

Alexandra’s leadership has made its mark on the young season, but her talent has her opponents fearing the Dolphins attack. Zan is currently leading the TCIS with 13 goals and 2 assists for a total of 28 points. “Zan understands that on the field, her job is to create attacking opportunities and finish with goals. She knows exactly what is expected of her,” Wheeler added.

During Kristen Wheeler’s tenure as coach with Cape Henry, she has seen the best and brightest come through the field hockey program. However, Alexandra is alone atop two of Wheeler’s lists. She is the first Dolphin, under Coach Wheeler, to score five goals in a single game and the first to be voted captain as a sophomore.

“In the past couple of weeks, Zan has purposely made a point to focus on shooting. She has noted that shooting and creating scoring opportunities is her main focus — and she has done just that,” Wheeler continued. “She scored seven goals last week, including five against Foxcroft, and this week she has already recorded a hat trick and an assist in our win over Norfolk Collegiate.”

Alexandra and the rest of the Dolphins look to keep the momentum rolling in the 2017-2018 Field Hockey season!
