Last year, homecoming at Cape Henry Collegiate was canceled because of the COVID-19 outbreak. This year it has been reintroduced and it will be the sophomores first time going to homecoming. 

Aubrey Zeliff, a sophomore, has been going to Cape Henry for 5 years now. Last year, due to the pandemic, many people didn’t even know that homecoming was canceled, including Zeliff. 

“Last year, I wasn’t even focused on homecoming,” she said. “I was so focused on school and getting used to COVID-19 life that it slipped my mind.”

Other students gave the same response. Last year, COVID-19 affected school life and canceled events such as the fall festival and homecoming. Many students weren’t aware that we were even supposed to get a homecoming.

“Since I was new to this school, I didn’t even know we were supposed to have a homecoming,” said Molly Hooks, a sophomore. 

While some people were not focusing on homecoming, or even knew that there might have been one at all, another student by the name of Kylie Marino, more commonly known as Kai, wasn’t happy.

“When I learned that there was no homecoming last year, I was very mad,” she said. 

When people talk about homecoming, usually they want to go with someone, whether it be with a date or a group of friends. This year, a lot of sophomores are planning to go with a group of friends. 

“I prefer going with a date, but also with my friends,” Marino said. “I will be dancing with my friends. I am very excited to go with, see, and hang out with them and my girlfriend.”

People usually have some plans before going to homecoming, whether it being getting ready for two hours alone or eating with friends. When going with a group of friends, they usually meet up before homecoming to get ready. 

“Before homecoming, I am going to go to a friend’s house,” Marino said.

Many people love going to homecoming and many of them have various reasons why they want to go. One reason is that they love dancing and another reason could be that they love spending time with friends.

“The reason why I want to go to homecoming is because I like the sense of community and hanging out with my friends,” Marino said.

There are only a couple things to do at homecoming. One of which is that some people will be dancing, and others would rather not. Sadie Martin, a sophomore, will be with talking with her friends.

“It’s always so awkward,” Martin said. “I usually end up in a corner with my friends.”

After homecoming, most people will go home and sleep or do other activities. Maylen Johnson, a sophomore, has some fun plans for after homecoming.

“I do have plans for after hoco,” Johnson said. “I’m going to be going to a friend’s house to watch a movie.”

Overall, most sophomores are looking forward to homecoming and can’t wait for it to come so that they can hangout with friends and enjoy the fun vibe.
