CHC Hosts Tidewater Independents Career Fair

On Monday, April 8 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. CHC welcomed nearly 180 college representatives to the Sixth Annual Tidewater Independents College Fair, held here this year at Cape Henry in the Alfred T. Taylor Field House. It was an open house-like format, so students could come and go at their convenience.
Many of the representatives traveled hundreds of miles to be with us. Primarily, all sophomore and junior families were encouraged to attend but Monday, all Upper School families were welcome.
Whether you had been to a college fair before or not, students were reminded of a few critical hints and tips for getting the most out of the experience:
DO…
  • Do introduce yourself and offer a firm handshake and good eye contact.
  • Do dress in CHC dress code.
  • Do take the lead – be mature and confident.
  • Do get organized and do your research ahead of time – ask thoughtful questions that cannot just be found in a handout or on the opening page of a school’s website.
DON’T…
  • Don’t ask questions that won’t get you helpful answers (“Do you have a good English department?”) or that are easy to find online (“How big is your school?”) or that are conversation fillers (“What major is most popular?”).
  • Don’t let your parents do all the talking.
  • Don’t pick up information from a school’s table only to throw it in the garbage shortly thereafter.
  • Don’t only visit the tables of colleges you know – this is your chance to learn and explore.
