A Controversial Fist Pump from Trump

September 11, 2001, is remembered as a solemn day for the American people. Today in 2018, our duty as the American people is to share the atrocities which took place on September 11, 2001, and make sure something like it never happens again. We the American people are also here to show support for those families who lost loved ones in the terrorist attacks. President Donald Trump was seen on the way to a memorial service pumping his fist with a smile on his face. These actions were in response to getting information on the Russia investigation, regarding the 2016 election. Naturally, many Americans have voiced their opinions about his actions on this particular morning.

I wanted to know what some of our Upper School thought about this situation. Was it appropriate of Trump to show so much excitement on such a hard day for many Americans? Was it okay that Trump tweeted about the Russia investigation right after tweeting about September 11, 2001, on the memorial of the day 17 years after? Liz Bowles (‘19) responded in saying President Trump’s actions this past Tuesday were inappropriate because he should not have shown such excitement to the public on a day where people are supposed to think about the past and think about others. Another anonymous student (’19) shared that she agreed with how it was inappropriate for President Trump to display such emotion on the memorial of the terrorist attack on the US.
