Eagles face the Patriots in Super Bowl 52
Battling this year as we kicked off Super Bowl LII were the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles. The so admired “underdog story” that many Americans thrive for, came to reality on February 4, 2018 in the US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The Eagles secured a big win on Sunday night, as their overflowing adrenaline and passion led them to success! Both teams battled until the clock ran out, leaving the Eagles eight points ahead of the Patriots, earning them the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy.
This year the Super Bowl ticket prices took a huge jump with the recent boom in the economy. Communications Manager for StubHub, Cameron Papp, stated that this year has been the highest pricing in ticket sales in the last 10 years. With this, the cheapest available ticket was sold for $3,145 on StubHub.(Handley, Lucy) Spending this type of money on a “cheap” ticket like this one is either impossible or denting to most Americans’ financial stance. It is even considered to be an unworthy purchase because of how high up and distant these seats are from all of the action. Of course, on the other hand, it is an experience in itself to just be a part of a Super Bowl environment, and for that reason, thousands of Americans purchase these tickets at least once in their lives.
This year, among ticket sales, concessions, and team merchandise, money was streaming in for the NFL. For entertainment for this year’s event, the phenomenal halftime performance given by Justin Timberlake cost the NFL only the expenses of the production of the show. The NFL does not pay the performers any money for their performance. The question remains is, WHY do performers want to perform time and time again during this event, if they are not making any revenue off of their hard work? Oh, but they really are. Many performers, such as Justin Timberlake, use this performance as a chance to advertise and promote their newest hit songs to the public. With the Super Bowl being streamed all around the world by millions of people, these performers try and put on their best show to impress their audience and spread their newest music to these people. No, they do not make money off of the actual performance itself, but these performers continue to perform because of how much attention it brings to their name and music.
Also on the entertainment spectrum, companies around the world negotiated for multi-million dollar spots to play their newest advertisements. While so many people have their eyes glued to the TV’s this Super Bowl Sunday, companies strategically capitalize on this opportunity. Many companies prepare all year to create a humorous, sentimental, or intriguing 30 second advertisement to air on Super Bowl Sunday. It becomes a bidding process when companies negotiate with close competitors to air their commercial in the best spot for viewing. The NFL makes a heavy amount of money from the advertisements themselves, selling a single 30-second spot for more than $5 million.
Overall, the Super Bowl is a traditional time for many families to gather, eat, and cheer on their favorite teams. Whether that be in the comfort of your home, a friends, or in the stadiums, it is guaranteed to be a good time. Undoubtedly, it is one of those days that keeps coming back year after year, and never fails to impress.
