The Dolphins hosted the Huskies from Flint Hill for a matchup with State Tournament implications on Saturday afternoon, and after trailing by as much as 15 points in the second half, the Dolphins battled back to win behind six 3-pointers in the final eight minutes. The Dolphins and Huskies battled throughout the opening eight minutes, with the Dolphins taking a one-point lead, 11-10, with an exuberant crowd in attendance. The momentum shifted dramatically, and the Dolphin crowd was silenced in the second quarter after Flint Hill’s big man found a rhythm. Cape Henry was limited to 11 points and trailed by 10, 22-32, at the break. The Dolphins returned to the floor with a new game plan for the second half, but the deficit reached the 15-point mark midway through the third quarter. A late third-quarter run propelled the Cape Henry back into the game, and the Dolphins reduced the Huskies’ lead to seven to open the final quarter of the night. The boys dug deep to cut the deficit to two points with 4:51 on the clock. Christian Moore hit a clutch shot and his first 3-pointer of the night to give the Dolphins the first lead since the start of the second quarter. The Huskies quickly answered with a bucket of their own, but Christian Moore continued his hot streak at the right time and gave the Dolphins a 59-57 lead behind his second 3-pointer of the night with 3:03 left in the night. After nearly two minutes of back-and-forth play, Cape Henry trailing 63-62 before Bryson Spell found the ball at the top of the key. Spell’s massive shot with seconds left in the night gave the Dolphins the final lead of the night as his critical 3-pointer put the Dolphins ahead 65-64. The boys held onto the lead for the final 19 seconds of the night and defeated #3 Flint Hill, 68-64. Greg Melvin led the Dolphins’ offense with 16 points, including two 3-pointers in the final quarter. Dajour Rucker and CJ Bailey each poured in 15 points on the night, with Bryson Spell adding 10. Christian Moore (9), and Danny Banister (3) rounded out the scoring efforts in Saturday’s contest. The Dolphins (16-4) will travel to Nansemond Suffolk for TCIS competition on Tuesday with tip-off set for 7:00 pm.
