Field Hockey- CHC 1, Covenant 0 (semifinal)

In the semifinal matchup between 2017’s State Final opponents, the Dolphins once again advanced to the DII State Finals with a 1-0 win over Covenant. Cape Henry controlled possession of the ball for much of the night, but the game’s first score proved elusive for both sides. Cape Henry kept the ball in the offensive third for more than half of the night but struggled to put the ball into the back of the cage. The first half came to a close with Covenant escaping an onslaught of shots and corner plays without conceding a goal. Returning to play from halftime, the Dolphins kept the offensive pressure and were eventually rewarded with 10 minutes remaining in play. Alexandra Land scored the first and final goal of the night, taking a breakaway and finishing unassisted to propel the Dolphins over Covenant.

Field Hockey- CHC 2, Foxcroft 0 (finals)

With sights on a second straight DII State Championship, the Dolphins met Foxcroft on the turf for Saturday’s State Finals. The Dolphins marched through the State Tournament without conceding a single goal, and Saturday was no different. Strong play from the Dolphin defense allowed the offense to stick to the gameplan and with 17 minutes remaining in the first half, Ali Gordon struck first to give Cape Henry a 1-0 lead. The 1-0 lead was carried through halftime, and as the second half was set to resume, Cape Henry needed to hold Foxcroft scoreless for 30 more minutes to be crowned champions once again. Adding an insurance goal, Ali Gordon played a ball to Claire Bingham who finished the ball into the back of the cage, giving Cape Henry a 2-0 lead with 13 minutes left to play. The Dolphins controlled possession throughout the final 13 minutes as the Dolphin sideline could feel the excitement building as the clock wound down. When the scoreboard struck zero minutes, the Dolphins were crowned DII State Champions for the second straight year, capping off an outstanding season for Varsity Field Hockey.
