It has finally happened. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their engagement on Monday, November 27th. This is the next step in history for the royal family. Unfortunately Meghan has absolutely no chance of becoming the queen of England due to the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William, as well as their two, soon to be three royal heirs.

Meghan had no plans on leaving Los Angeles, and retiring from her role in USA’s show Suits. Meghan was enjoying a trip to London just as any other tourist would, documenting her trip on Instagram with pictures of her in front of Buckingham Palace and even the Royal Box in Wimbledon. As stated by Daily Mail, the couple were set up by two well-connected friends and have been dating since the July following Meghan’s trip to London. After dating for 16 months, Prince Harry proposed and the couple took the news public with their engagement photos. Prince Harry popped the question on a “cozy night” in their cottage. Meghan stated in her first couples interview with Prince Harry, “We were trying to roast a chicken, and it was an amazing surprise, it was so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got on one knee.” This amazing surprise has not only started a new chapter in Meghan’s life but also in both of the sweethearts’ lives together.

The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate,  spoke out about her soon to be sister-in-law and Prince Harry’s engagement a few days ago. “William and I are absolutely thrilled,” she told reporters. “It’s a really happy time for any couple and we wish them all the best and hope they enjoy this happy moment.” Harry didn’t immediately share the news of his partner Meghan with his older brother and Duchess but he stated in an interview that, “William was longing to meet her and so was Catherine, so you know being our neighbors we managed to get that in a couple of, well, quite a few times now.”

The Kensington Palace announced on Tuesday that Prince Harry’s and Meghan’s royal wedding date is set and in motion. They stated that the wedding should take place May 2018, but an exact day was not given. The wedding date also falls after the Duchess of Cambridge’s due date, meaning there could be another little one attending this prestigious event. The Prime Minister of Britain declared the royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton (the Duchess of Cambridge) as a national holiday (bank holiday) for England, but it unfortunately looks like he will not be doing the same for Prince Harry’s and Meghan’s special day.

The love that is extended to the happy couple is world wide. Former President Obama tweeted, “Michelle and I are delighted to congratulate Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on their engagement. We wish you a lifetime of joy and happiness together.”  In our CHC community, there hasn’t been quite an uprising in reaction. However, a few students chimed in with their positive thoughts.  Arial Fiske De Gouveia (Class of 2020), who formerly lived in England and is a British citizen stated, “I am very happy for Prince Harry and Meghan.  I think that it is brilliant that they are bringing diversity into the royal family.” For those who do not know, Meghan is not only bi-racial but also divorced.  Charlotte Brown (Class of 2019) stated, “I think it’s good for the country. I think it is also cool that there will be an American in the royal family. ” Sierra Guluzian (Class of 2020) added that “It is similar to Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, only Meghan is American. I know the public would love her, even more than they already do.”

Whether England is your hometown and you follow the royal family, or you are an American ecstatic to see our contribution to the royal family with Meghan, this really is just an amazingly romantic love story between two happy people. Congrats to the happy couple!
