Election Results 2016

So, unless you’ve been living under a very large rock, you would know that Donald Trump won the presidency. Some would say that this is a historical moment, which in some ways it is. However, others simply see this as electing another president. I find myself leaning towards the historical moment side, in that this is a historically bad moment.

As someone who leans towards the democratic side of things, I view Donald Trump in a very negative light. Not because he is a republican, but because he represents and supports a lot of things that I am against. I find him to be an egotist (I can’t stand egotists in general) and a bigot, as well as a compulsive liar. I find his views on immigrants and other minorities as well as women to be shockingly offensive, and many of the things he has said make me cringe. The things he has said about his daughter are disgusting and creepy, and his views of global warming as a hoax invented by China is utterly absurd. Whether or not he actually believes that or he just said it to get the crackers riled up is anyone’s best guess. His “Gettysburg Address” that was hailed as a fantastic speech by Fox News (so take it with a grain of salt) and was supposed to outline, in detail, his plans and policies simply went over his routine of “Hillary for Prison” again. His sleazy attempt at gaining more support by claiming he will protect the LGBT community during the RNC was comically ironic, seeing as his running mate is a vocal advocate for conversion therapy.

I believe that Donald Trump represents prejudice, hatred, and (dare I say) evil. Even before his bid for the presidency, I did not like him and found him to be an elitist snob. Now he has achieved his goal, and won the presidency, and now America is at a crossroads. We have just elected a businessman to the presidency, someone who has no political experience other than supporting the righteously absurd “birther” movement. Nevertheless, the electoral college has spoken, and Trump will be our 45th president.

While I believe that this is a very low moment in American history, I also believe that something good can come of it. The night is darkest just before dawn, and dawn is coming. Once this is over, we the people as a whole will be stronger and closer. If you support Donald Trump, then that is your choice, but know that I have my opinions as well. We don’t have to agree with each other, but we still have to respect each other. Just because I’m a young liberal doesn’t mean that my opinion doesn’t deserve the same amount of respect as yours, whatever that may be.

I support coexistence, as we are all human and must share a planet. Live and let live. As a nation, we are more divided than ever, and we need to come back together before we destroy each other. So now, we have to try to work together. Find some common ground so that we don’t screw everything up. We allowed hatred and prejudice to win this time; let’s make sure it doesn’t happen again.
