The game plan for Spike’s K9 Foundation founder Mr. James Hatch is quite simple: “Hit the road and drum up donations.”

Although just started, 2016 has been a turning year for the local organization. In a characteristically enthusiastic tone, Hatch, the former Navy SEAL who was wounded in action, recounted the recent activity of his organization over a phone call.

“We’ve been lucky,” he admitted, when asked about the connection with investigative journalist Anderson Cooper. “We will have helped forty one dogs in Hampton Roads, three quarters because of Anderson.”

The rest of the donations he said, came from either individual donors, or local business’. In the last few months, the fund has also branched out to other states, helping K9’s in other jurisdictions.

But now the organization is looking forward. In the new year, Spike’s K9 Fund has already set out to create new fundraisers. Next month the organization is traveling to Ohio to host a Hockey themed fundraiser. Also in March will be a Beer Garden event to aid in raising funds for the foundation. All of this leads up to their new project, the K9 Krijger Campaign.

In honor of a fallen K9 named Krijger, Spike’s K9 Fund is purchasing special custom fit ballistic vests to better protect the dogs while in combat. It is always Hatch’s aim to improve the safety of these dogs.

The organization who makes the vests is called K9 Storm. Founded by a former serviceman who was shot in the face, the company now makes completely customized vests for K9’s in action, but with this added safety comes an added price. In spite of the increased costs, businesses and individuals have donated money to purchase an entire vest for dogs, which costs roughly $2,200 per vest.

“Something worth mentioning is that local businesses are sponsoring vests,” said Hatch, showing that despite the vest costs donations are still coming in. “It is important that people know they can do that.”

Another new connection the fund has made is with AmazonSmile. With AmazonSmile, you can sign up to be a more frequent donor. According to Amazon’s website, Amazon will donate 0.5% of the price of your eligible AmazonSmile purchases to Spike’s K9 Fund whenever you shop on AmazonSmile. To connect with this opportunity, there is a link at the top of the fund’s website that says Amazon Smile.

The blog portion of the website reveals the more sentimental and gracious side of Hatch and his organization. With great opportunities coming up to serve or donate, now is the perfect time to connect with Spike’s K9 Fund.
